Lighting in wet-zones

IP-classification Guide

When selecting lighting, it is essential to consider the IP classification, which indicates a lamp's resistance to dust and water. This classification plays a crucial role in ensuring that lighting performs optimally and maintains safety under varying conditions. It is particularly significant in environments with high humidity or direct exposure to water, such as bathrooms and outdoor areas.

This guide provides a detailed overview of the most used IP classifications, their technical features, and specific areas of application. The aim is to simplify the process of choosing the right lighting for both residential and professional settings, whether for indoor use or the most demanding outdoor environments.

IP20

This classification applies to areas where no specific protection against dust or water is required. Lamps with an IP20 rating are designed for standard indoor environments where they are not exposed to moisture or water. All our lamps are approved for use in these areas.

IP44

Lamps with an IP44 rating are suitable for areas where minor amounts of moisture or splashing water may occur. This makes them particularly appropriate for bathrooms and certain outdoor spaces where damp conditions are present. In bathrooms, IP44-rated lamps can be placed at least 60 cm away from water sources such as sinks, showers, or bathtubs. This rating is also suitable for some outdoor installations, such as covered areas.

IP54

IP54-rated lamps are specifically designed for outdoor use, offering protection against both dust and water splashes from all directions. This classification ensures enhanced durability, allowing the lamp to remain functional under changing weather conditions, including rain and light dust. IP54 lamps are ideal for use on facades, covered patios, or other areas with moderate exposure to the elements.

IP65

Lamps with an IP65 classification are dust-tight and capable of withstanding powerful water jets from any direction. They are made to handle challenging conditions, such as heavy rain or direct exposure to water. These lamps are particularly well-suited for outdoor use, including gardens, pathways, or exposed buildings.

IP67

The high IP67 classification guarantees complete dust protection and the ability to withstand temporary immersion in water up to one meter deep. Lamps in this category are suitable for areas with constant or regular water exposure, such as fountains, pool areas, or other damp environments. To ensure safety and functionality, lamps in these areas must operate on low voltage (max. 12V), making them ideal for wet and demanding settings.
